Panacea
"Panacea" - Moody blue visible as the light hits, burnt orange with flashes of copper.
This is a personal story the kind I don't usually share on here.
September is CMT awareness month, what is CMT? CMT is the acronym for Charcot Marie Tooth Disease, CMT is one of a group of disorders that causes damage to peripheral nerves, peripheral nerves transmit information from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body, as well as sensory information such as touch, back to the spinal cord.
*CMT is one of the most common neurological disorders
*CMT is degenerative and there is no cure.
Here is where the story gets personal.
Two years ago, I found out my almost 80 year old mom was diagnosed with CMT (how I just found out is another story.) She struggles to walk, use her hands and has neuropathy. I can't imagine how hard it is not knowing what to expect in terms of the severity of your symptoms, or what will come next. Imagine if you will, going from independent, to wobbly and unable to safely get around on your own.
My mom spent years pursuing a diagnosis because she was atypical. CMT typically begins to show symptoms in adolescence or early adulthood, my mom was over 50 before she began to show symptoms. Secondly, CMT is genetic and she has three younger brothers who have no symptoms, so as you can imagine this was not on the radar in terms of diagnosis.
I choose to not be tested because I would rather live my life in the present than to worry about what lies ahead, however it is something I have to be aware of and of course i have concerns for my children.
Finding a cure is very personal for me, and I would like to make a small donation this month through the sale of this pen. The colors of this pen loosely represent the colors of the CMTA. CMTA is a non profit that offers a wealth of services such as education, resources, clinics, camps for adolescence, assistance for parents with affected children, fundraising and so much more. I've named this pen 'Panacea" in hopes that one day there will be a cure for this ravaging disease. Please help find a cure for future generations.
* This pen comes with a Schmidt K5 converter and a steel Jowo#6 nib in your choice of F,M or B. Upon selecting the purchase button, a pop up window will appear allowing you to choose your nib.
